The Laramie High School girls swimming and diving team got a good look at the statewide competition Saturday at the Cheyenne Invitational.

The Lady Plainsmen won by a wide margin with 279 points. Green River was second with 191 and Cheyenne Central was third with 163 at the Cheyenne South pool.

“Every 4A team in the state was there, which was nice to give us a look of where we are at during this point in the season — and it was kind of a pretty good look for us,” LHS coach Tom Hudson said.

“It wasn’t the prettiest day of swimming for us, but we showed a bit of depth and power. Overall, I’m pleased to win by that score this early in the season.”

One of the highlights was the McPherson sisters placing first and second in the 50-yard freestyle — junior Olivia won in 25.08 seconds and sophomore Katie was runner-up in 26.09.

Olivia McPherson also joined senior Carter Burchi, junior Sage Morton freshman Anna Roesler to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.30.

The Lady Plainsmen also had a total of four runner-up and four third-place finishes.

Freshman diver Natalie Six was fifth with 301.75 points and sophomore Maddie Appelhans was seventh with 284.75 points in a field of 27 divers.

“For our divers — being as young as they are — to score those high points for was kind of a standout for our team,” Hudson said.
