CHEYENNE – The Laramie County Community College volleyball team opened the Pizza Hut Invitational with a pair of wins Friday in Sterling, Colorado.

The Golden Eagles topped Northeast Community College, 3-0 (scores were not available). Northeast is ranked No. 17 in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II poll.

LCCC followed that with a 3-1 win over Northeastern Junior College. The host school is No. 20 in this week’s NJCAA Div. I poll.

Sophomore Avery Nelson posted 34 kills across the two matches, including a career-best 20 against NJC.

Payton Stack added 19 kills and four blocks, while Lizzy Clark chipped in with 15 kills and nine blocks.

Freshman middle Jazzy Espinoza – a Cheyenne East graduate – registered 11 kills and six blocks.

Sophomore libero Kyle Meltzer had 29 digs, while Kylie Martin added 25.

Sophomore setter Kasandra Sturges dished out 43 assists and added 22 digs. Gwen Sheldon also had 36 assists.
