It has been more than 20 years since Laramie and the Jacoby Golf Course has hosted the Wyoming State Amateur Golf Championships.
But that long drought comes to end today with the first of three rounds of the three-day event at the par 70, 6,590-yard course.
“Golf has evolved (in Wyoming) where this tournament has only been held at the higher-end private clubs in the state,” said Joe Jensen, the director of men’s and women’s golf at the University of Wyoming, and club professional and course manager at Jacoby.
“For us to get the opportunity to host this tournament as a high-volume (municipal course) is neat.”
Approximately 114 male and female players are scheduled to compete. They will get a chance to experience the recent improvements that have been made at Jacoby, which includes a new irrigation system, ponds on the course, an indoor hitting facility and a short-game area.
“We’ve probably been under construction the last five years in different capacities,” Jensen said. “The course is in great shape, and for the players in the open division we’re going to stretch the course out.
“It will be a good test.”
“But not only will this be good for the course, it will give people a chance to come into Laramie and feel the buzz around campus and check things out. That’s what’s going to make this a fun event.”
Four of Jensen’s UW players will compete, including Laramie’s John Murdock IV, who won the state match play championships two weeks ago at the Golf Club at Devils Tower in Hulett. Murdock IV defeated UW teammate Glenn Workman, who also is in this week’s field.
The other two UW golfers are from Cheyenne — Quintin Pope and Jared Edeen.
Another notable player is Jordan Costello of Pinedale. He was a player recruited by Jensen, but went to Utah.
Riverton’s Easton Paxton, who signed to play college golf at North Carolina State, won’t play due to a conflict with a tournament he committed to in Idaho.
The tournament is operated by the Wyoming State Golf Association. It has a system in place for younger players who play in state events such as this one to qualify for other national events, such as the Junior America’s Cup and the Pacific Coast Amateur.
“This should be one of the finest golf events in Wyoming’s history,” said Dave Snyder, executive director of the Wyoming State Golf Association. “We have a great turnout of men’s and women’s college players, past Wyoming amateur state champions, current Hall of Fame members and up and coming group of junior golfers.
“Anyone who has a passion for golf in Wyoming will be attending this event.”
Tee times each day begin at 7:30 a.m. for the morning groups and noon for the afternoon groups. Players will tee off on both the front and back nines. The leaders after the Saturday’s second round will be among the last to tee off Sunday.
