University of Wyoming senior golfer Glenn Workman shot a 3-under-par 69 — the second-best round of the day — in blustery conditions Saturday to lead the Cowboys up the leaderboard on the second day of the Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship in Bremerton, Washington.
UW shot a 5-over 289 on the Gold Mountain Olympic Course to move up three spots from sixth to a tie for third with 18 holes remaining. The Cowboys are tied with Fresno State at 582 after 36 holes.
No. 24-ranked UNLV leads the field at 572, five shots better than No. 43 Colorado State’s second-place total of 577.
UW will start today’s final round five shots behind CSU for second and 10 behind UNLV for first.
“I’m proud of how our guys played with the composure they showed today,” Cowboys golf coach Joe Jensen said in a UW release. “In rained, the wind blew and it’s a tough course. You have to hit the right shots and make putts and we did that today.”
Workman started his second round with two bogies, then ripped off five birdies in a six-hole stretch to kick start his round. A birdie on his last hole left the UW senior tied with UNLV’s Jack Trent for seventh place and seven shots behind leader Shintaro Ban of UNLV. Ban’s 67 — the only round to top Workman’s 69 — leaves the Rebel at 135 and with a four-shot lead over Nevada’s Grant Booth.
Senior Drew McCullough is next for UW in a tie for 11th at 144 after a 75.
UW sophomore Dan Starzinski shot a 74 in the second round and is one shot behind McCullough at 145, good for a tie for 17th place. Senior Arron Lickteig added the fourth UW score at 151 after a 75 to tie for 31st. Junior John Murdock is tied for 39th at 153 after a 75.
“The team that does it best tomorrow is going to win, simply put,” Jensen said. “It’s all about staying within yourself and just playing hard.”
UW will tee off at 11 a.m. MDT along with Nevada.
Henderson breaks own record in triple jump
UW junior Ja’la Henderson again broke her own school record in the women’s triple jump Saturday during the final day of the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California.
Henderson won a packed event with a jump of 43 feet, 8½ inches, breaking her record, set earlier this spring, by eight inches.
The 43-8½ mark is also eighth best in the NCAA women’s ranks this season pending other Saturday results and leads the MW by 1½ feet.
“Ja’la had a weekend of near misses,” UW associated track coach Quincy Howe said in a UW release. “Her biggest achievement, I believe, was keeping a level head through the adversity of bouncing back in her last event.”
All of UW’s athletes competed in the prestigious Beach Invitational on Saturday to wrap up a long weekend in California for both teams.
Senior Kerry White placed eighth in the 800-meter dash in a time of 2 minutes 9.54 seconds
The Cowboys were led by the 4x100-meter relay of juniors Jace Marx, Jackson Wood and Sam Kirkeide and senior Kevin Blackett. The quartet placed seventh in 41.41 seconds.
Late Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, sophomore Daniel Hintz ran a time of 3:44.92 in the 1,500-meter run to record the second-fastest time in UW men’s history.
UW will wrap up the regular season with the 7220 Invite on Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
