Imagine that, a guy who covers Wyoming football has the top three picks being Cowboys. But a look at the numbers makes it hard not to. Wingard has recorded 100-plus tackles each of his first three seasons.
He is a sure tackler who plays as physical as anyone in the conference. And he took a big step forward in terms of his pass-coverage skills last season with a team-best five interceptions. Wingard was the preseason pick as MW defensive player of the year in 2017, but that award went to Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, who is now with the Dallas Cowboys.
Wingard was again the preseason pick as the conference’s top defensive player, and while individual accolades don’t drive him, I wouldn’t bet against Wingard – or anyone on this UW defense – this season.
