MrEmpirical

The people of the State of Wyoming should just stop funding the University of Wyoming football program. It runs in the red and is of no benefit to Wyoming students in the way of scholarships. Look at the list of recruits, only one from the State of Wyoming? The truth is, the Wyoming program takes a token athlete every year from in State and then gives all of its scholarships to out of state students. Why should Wyoming tax payers fund the program when none of Wyoming kids really have a shot at making the team?

Xman

A small part of this argument is correct, in that most Wyoming football scholarships go to out-of-state kids. That said, football program revenue accounts for the lion's share of most athletic budgets across the nation, Wyoming is no exception. Typically football produces 70% or more and helps to subsidize most other men's and almost all women's sport. These other sports include quite a few Wyoming athletes. So the football program has a complicated but strategic relationship with the athletic department's budget.
