Kenny Foster feels the pressure, but that is not a bad thing.
One of five newcomers for the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team, the 6-foot-5 guard from Smoky Hill High in Aurora, Colorado, was the first to commit and sign with the Cowboys for their 2019 recruiting class.
Foster also was the most decorated. He was named Colorado’s Gatorade player of the year as a senior after he averaged 27.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.8 blocked shots and 1.4 steals per game.
“I think he has a chance to be special,” fourth-year UW coach Allen Edwards said. “He already has the knowledge and understanding in how to play. He has to get louder, but when you watch him he has a good pace. He can get his shot.
“It is early, but we are expecting some good things from his freshman year.”
Edwards said Foster can play point guard, shooting guard and both forward spots. Where he will play this season is far from being determined. Right now, Foster and the rest of the UW newcomers are getting adjusted to college basketball and college life.
“It is definitely terrific, but it is a lot more intense,” Foster said. “Thankfully, I have all of these great teammates who are helping me through every bit of it.
“Even the academics are more intense. I’ve never had a study hall before. They are intense about being on time and being early to everything. In the practices, you have to go 110% all the time, no matter what happens. I’ve never been a part of anything like this, but it is awesome.”
Foster is about four months away from playing in his first game for the Cowboys, but already there have been some comparisons to former program standouts.
Edwards said Foster is “just as good or better” in terms of his athleticism as former guard Justin James, who was the 40th overall pick in last month’s NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. Foster could be the next player to come out of Colorado to star for the Cowboys, the last being guard Josh Adams (2013-16) from Chaparral High in Parker. And, Foster joins redshirt sophomore guard Hunter Maldonado (Colorado Springs), who will be counted on to be one of the Cowboys’ best players and leaders this season.
“Absolutely, there is pressure,” Foster said. “With Josh coming out of Colorado, and guys who are pros like (forward Larry Nance Jr. and James) there’s starting to be this reputation with Wyoming basketball that you have to be good to be here.”
Foster said he is most comfortable playing shooting guard or small forward, but said he isn’t concerned about where he plays this season or in future seasons.
“I will let Coach Edwards decide that,” he said with a smile.
