University of Wyoming redshirt sophomore wrestler Montorie Bridges went 2-0 Saturday during the first day of the Big 12 Wrestling Championships to advance to his first Big 12 title match.
As a team, the Cowboys had a bit of a rough day and are fifth with 50 team points and seven wrestlers with a chance to place. The Cowboys advanced four wrestlers into the semifinals in their respective weights.
Bridges will face off with top-seed and second-ranked Daton Fix of Oklahoma State today for the 133-pound title. The two met once during the regular season with Fix winning 3-0.
Bridges opened the morning session with a 16-1 technical fall over Oklahoma’s Anthony Madrigal in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Cowboy rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit to No. 2 seed and 10th-ranked Austin Gomez of Iowa State with a pair of takedowns in the final two periods for the 6-3 decision. With the win, he qualified for his second career NCAA Championships.
“It just affirms to me that I can wrestle with these guys,” Bridges said in a UW release. “This does a lot for the confidence. It shows you where you’re at and it solidifies in my mind that I can do what I know I can do. (Against Gomez) I knew I was conditioned and wasn’t going to be tired. I just knew I was going to do what I had to do and that I’d be fine.”
UW senior Branson Ashworth — the top seed at 165 — advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season by beating Iowa State’s Logan Schumacher 7-2. In the semifinals, Ashworth lost to No. 5 seed Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State by a 3-2 score.
Redshirt freshman Hayden Hastings opened his day with two wins, majoring South Dakota State’s Samuel Grove 10-1 before upsetting No. 4 seed Marcus Coleman of Iowa State 9-3. In the semifinals, Hastings ran into top seed Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma and lost 18-5.
UW true freshman Tate Samuelson was the fourth Cowboy to advance to the semifinals with a 5-2 win over Fresno State’s Jackson Hemauer. Samuelson came up short to top seed Sam Colbray of Iowa State in the semifinals.
Sophomore 149-pounder Jaren Jensen went 1-2 Saturday. Jensen lost to No. 2 seed Max Thomsen in a first-round match before winning 14-6 in consolation action. Jensen then lost to Christian Monserrat of West Virginia.
At heavyweight, Brian Andrews went 3-1 and will be in today’s consolation semifinals. Andrews started with a major decision over Northern Colorado’s Robert Winters before coming back after a loss with wins over NDSU’s Brandon Metz and SDSU’s Blake Wolters.
Sam Turner joins Jensen in wrestling for seventh after going 2-2.
Cole Verner, Dewey Krueger and Cale Davidson were eliminated from the tournament on Saturday.
Today’s action begins at 11 a.m. MT with the final sessions schedule for 6 p.m. and will be televised on ATTSN.
