The Cowgirls volleyball team dropped its final nonconference tune-up match of the season Saturday 25-11, 25-23, 25-19 by 15th-ranked host Creighton during its Creighton Classic in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tara Traphagan led the Cowgirls (5-6) with 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while Jackie McBride chipped in with six kills and a team-high four blocking assists. Both McBride and Traphagan were named to the all-classic team.
Madi Fields and Erika Jones led UW defensively with 11 digs each and Mackenzie Coates added eight digs to go with 20 assists.
The Bluejays tallied a .203 hitting percentage while holding the Cowgirls to just a .055 clip. CU also had a 14-8 edge in blocks and had two more service aces than Wyoming at 6-4.
After dropping the first set, the Cowgirls’ rally in set two came up short. Trailing 23-17 in the second set, UW scored six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 24-23 before a Creighton block ended the rally to end the set.
In the third set, the Cowgirls fell behind early 10-3 before slowly chipping away to trail by one at 16-15. After the teams traded points to make it 19-18, the Bluejays took command by scoring six of the final seven points for the match.
UW will open Mountain West play Thursday hosting UNLV in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
