CHEYENNE – The Cheyenne Extreme under-18 fastpitch softball team only needed six innings to dominate both the Lander Legends and Wyoming Green River Chaos with commanding 16-1 and 20-0 wins to begin double elimination bracket play of the Wyoming State USA Tournament on Saturday in Casper.
Against Lander, Cheyenne got off to a quick 4-0 start in the first inning and never looked back. The Extreme added two more in the second – the same inning Lander scored their sole run – before piling on a double-digit inning with 10 runs in the third to secure the victory.
Ten different players collected hits for the team’s total of 16, with Trista Stehwien leading with three. Stehwien also drove in four runs, while Alexis Naughton added three.
Ariana Galicia pitched the first two innings, allowing two hits, one run and striking out six. Michaela Moorehouse stepped in for the third inning allowing just one hit, while striking out two and walking one.
Against Green River, Cheyenne found an even hotter start, scoring five times in the opening frame. An eight-run second inning solidified their lead. But the Extreme weren’t finished, crossing seven more runners over the plate in the third inning for the 20-0 victory.
Cheyenne exceeded the first game tally with 11 players collecting hits: Jayden Gashler collected three, while five players each had two. The Extreme finished with 18 hits to Green River’s two.
Janey Adair tossed all three innings for Cheyenne, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out six.
The team lost 5-3 to to the Hickory Lady Hornets of Belair, Mayland, during bracket play of the Space Coast World Series on Thursday in Melbourne, Florida.
Cheyenne (37-10-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Trista Stehwien lined an RBI single to left field to score Jayden Gashler.
Hickory’s Gabrielle Miller tied it with a home run in the top of the fifth. Hickory tacked on four more runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Cheyenne answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Gashler went 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Kenzie Boltz, Stehwien, Brittney Lopez and Moorehouse also picked up one hit each.
Extreme plays the winner of the QC Firebirds (Moline, Illinois) and the Texas Blaze Maguire (Richmond, Texas) match, which is at 7:45 a.m. today.
