CHEYENNE – The Cheyenne Central girls tennis team won a share of its fifth state championship in the past six years Saturday in Gillette.

The Lady Indians split the title with Sheridan, as both teams finished with 45 points.

Central junior Emily Needham beat Casper Kelly Walsh sophomore Finley Klinger in the No. 1 singles final, 6-2, 6-3. Klinger was the only player to beat Needham this season. Needham also was the No. 2 singles champion in 2018.

The Indians’ No. 1 doubles tandem of juniors Sarah Foster and Cassadie Anderson lost to Cody’s Simona Icenogle and Maddy Wambeke, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in the final. Central junior Kaitlyn Smedley finished third in No. 2 singles by beating Green River’s Megan Counts, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Central also got a third-place finish from its No. 3 doubles team of senior Tenley Keller and freshman Gracie Osterland, who beat Cheyenne East’s Savanna Stoddard and Sydney O’Brien, 7-5, 6-4.

East finished eighth in the team race with 10 points. The Lady Thunderbirds’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Olivia Shoemaker and Addy Turner took fourth.

Cheyenne South senior Brendan Lock won his third consecutive No. 1 singles state title, beating Laramie’s Kyle Moore in the final, 6-0, 6-0. Lock was the state runner-up at No. 1 singles during his freshman campaign.

The Bison tied Kelly Walsh for third in the team standings with 23 points. Powell ran away with the boys title with 54 points. Campbell County was the state runner-up (31.5).

Cheyenne Central senior Ryan Stampfli placed third at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Thunder Basin’s Jordan Klaassen. Central’s boys were sixth in the team race with 20 points.
