CHEYENNE — Burns boys basketball coach Shawn Mollett stepped down after just one season at the post, the school announced in an email Tuesday morning.
“We thank coach Mollett for his contributions to our program and for his dedication to our student-athletes,” Burns athletics director Kurtis Suloff wrote in a news release. “Coach Mollett will continue to coach football and be an important part of Burns High School.
“We will begin our search to find a new head boys basketball coach immediately.”
The Broncs went 1-23 during Mollett’s lone season at the helm. It was Burns’ 10th consecutive losing season. The Broncs haven’t won more than nine games in a year since going 15-12 during the 2013-14 campaign. They haven’t qualified for a state tournament since 2015.
“This decision did not come easily to me,” Mollett wrote in an email to WyoSports. “I feel that I am not the right coach for this program at this time, but who knows what the future holds. … I feel that with my current level of experience, I cannot get this team to the level they are capable of playing.”
Prior to taking over the Burns boys, Mollett spent one season as the eighth grade girls A-team coach at Cheyenne’s Johnson Junior High. He also was an assistant boys coach for two seasons at Johnson.
Mollett succeeded Suloff, who coached Burns’ boys for four seasons before moving into an assistant principal and athletics director role last summer.
“I am still planning on staying in Burns for the foreseeable future,” said Mollett, who teaches biology and environmental science in Burns. “I love the kids, and the staff and loved my time spent as the boys basketball coach.
“… I have plans of being a head coach again, just no timeline for what that looks like.”
