LARAMIE – It wasn’t the girls swimming and diving meet everyone was envisioning, but both teams got what they wanted.
Unlike the dual that went down to the wire a couple of weeks ago in Cheyenne, Laramie High topped Cheyenne Central 102-79 on Tuesday at the Laramie Community Recreation Center.
The first meeting came down to the last event during a 94-92 victory for the Lady Plainsmen.
This time, Central coach Mark Miller looked at the big picture and where the dual fell on the schedule.
“We are really young with two seniors, and we’ve been pushing it really hard with 10 competitions in 21 days, which is a lot in the first three weeks,” he said. “A lot of the girls wanted to do something different. We swim our cross-town rivals on Friday, and we had a big invite last Saturday (at South).
“So we gave them an opportunity to qualify for state in different events.”
Samantha Geyer did just that when she won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 26.30 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:05.69. Both events were added toward her possible state races.
“I like to switch it up,” Geyer said. “If I keep swimming the same events I will for state, I would get burned out. I enjoy the 200 I.M. even though it has the butterfly, which I do not like.
“I wasn’t expecting to have a 1:05 in the 100 back, but I was really proud that I pushed myself to go faster than I thought I could.”
Central’s (0-3, 0-3) Logan Anderson outpaced the field in the 500 free to win in 5:57.61.
“(Central) is shorthanded with sickness and illnesses, but they swam tough,” LHS coach Tom Hudson said. “Our girls were ready to swim today and always get up for the rivalry with Central. I always appreciate what Central brings to the table in these meets.”
Central hosts Cheyenne East at 5 p.m. on Friday.
