CHEYENNE – Cheyenne East put four wrestlers into state championships and still has seven others alive in wrestlebacks after two days of the Class 4A state tournament at the Wyoming Center in Casper.
The Thunderbirds are third in the team standings with 146.5 points. Thunder Basin leads with 197, and reigning state champ Sheridan is second with 164.5.
East junior 150-pounder Liam Fox will be trying for his third consecutive state championship this afternoon in Casper. Fox has won all of his bouts by pin. Seniors Colby Olson (190 pounds) and Charlie Green (285) advanced to their second consecutive state title bouts. Olson edged Natrona’s Tucker Sides 3-2 in the semifinals, while Green has won all three of his matches by pin.
Sophomore Sammy Sanchez (113) also will wrestle for a state title today. He is 3-0 and reached the final with a 9-6 victory over Rock Springs’ Dane Arnoldi.
Cheyenne Central is seventh in the team standings.
Senior Samuel Lucas Smith (106) and junior Andrew Gonzales (132) moved onto state finals. Smith has pinned all three of his opponents in the first round. Gonzales moved into the state title bout with an 8-6 win over East’s Kolby Williams. The Indians have four other athletes alive in wrestlebacks.
Cheyenne South senior 157-pounder Layne Warburton moved on to the state finals with a 6-2 victory over Sheridan’s Kelten Crow. South is 12th in the 4A team standings.
