The Rock River Lady Longhorns appeared to have St. Stephens’ number Thursday midway through the second quarter of the Wyoming Class 1A State Basketball Tournament in Casper.
The Longhorns led the defending state champion Eagles by 12 points with just more than six minutes to play in the first half of their quarterfinal game at the Casper Events Center.
But Rock River had no answers for St. Stephens’ Trinity Goggles the rest of the way.
Goggles powered the Eagles into the Class 1A semifinals with 14 points, 16 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists in a 59-46 victory.
The Lady Longhorns (20-4) move into the consolation bracket and will play Arvada-Clearmont at 9 a.m. today at Casper College. St. Stephens meets Farson-Eden in a semifinal game at 4:30 p.m.
Rock River was controlling the tempo of Thursday’s game and controlling Goggles for the first 12 minutes.
The Eagles, however, ended the second quarter on a 17-5 run to tie the contest at 31-all.
St. Stephens outscored Rock River 22-10 in the third quarter for a 43-31 lead and never let the Lady Longhorns back in the game in the fourth quarter.
Lydia Moore and Andi Todd led the way for the Lady Longhorns in the loss.
Moore scored a game-high 24 points by going 8 of 11 from the field and 7 of 11 on free throws. Moore also totaled five rebounds and four blocked shots. Todd added 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
Rock River turned the ball over 28 times against St. Stephens’ defensive pressure.
That helped the Eagles attempt a whopping 73 shots in the game compared to only 42 by the Lady Longhorns. The Eagles also outrebounded the Lady Longhorns 49-28, leading to a 21-5 edge in second-chance points.
