LARAMIE — What fans, players and coaches said during and after the University of Wyoming’s 24-16 homecoming loss to Utah State in front of 18,378 at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium Saturday.
— “Does the Wyoming punter understand not to punt in the end zone when he’s punting in Utah State territory?” — @DDevlin31 via Twitter after UW sophomore walk-on punter Ryan Galovich punted into the end zone twice in the first half.
— “I liked the idea of a wildcat with Chambers. In the stands, everyone hates (offensive coordinator Brent) Vigen.” — @307RicoShea via Twitter on UW giving true freshman quarterback two snaps in the first half, but on his second snap Chambers lost a fumble.
— “Is there a supplies closet somewhere in the new HAPC that we can lock Vigen in for the second half and possibly the rest of the season?” — @EvanAnderson307 via Twitter. UW trailed 10-3 at halftime, had 73 yards of total offense and averaged 2.1 yards play in the first half.
— “Defense definitely came to play. They added some schemes and the front four is getting lots of pressure. Really impressive to keep this group at 10 points in first half.” — @JoshDWalrath via Twitter. Utah State came in averaging 51-plus points per game.
— “With that amount of time and that amount of timeouts (one), Tyler had run the two-minute offense efficiently. That was a decision to put our football team in the best position to win. I felt confident about Tyler. He’s operated the two-minute drive well and that was our decision.” — Fifth-year UW coach Craig Bohl on why he went with Tyler Vander Waal at quarterback over Sean Chambers on the final possession of the game.
— “Why would you switch quarterbacks with the game on the line … horrible coaching.” — @KerseyRuss via Twitter when Chambers was pulled on UW’s final offensive series for Vander Waal.
— “Chambers gave the offense some spark. Haven’t seen that all year from Vander Waal. Agreed, that last series was bad coaching.” — @Baholtz650 via Twitter
— “If Chambers doesn't start the CSU game, Bohl will have lost this team and the fanbase. Vander Waal just isn't good. (FYI, Bohl is now 8-24 without a diamond in the rough 1st rd pick QB at Wyo.).” — @vinyard6565 via Twitter
— “Chambers made the Cowboys look like they should. Two halves of Chambers’ production and that would have been a Cowboy “W.” — @Herderpoke92 via Twitter
— “Love Bohl, but I will eternally second guess having (Vander Waal) in at the end.” — @esterbrook38 via Twitter
— “Moving forward, just do what they ask me to do and get reps here and there. If they ask me to go to the scout team, then I got to the scout team. They have a good plan. I’m a team guy. If burning my redshirt helps us become bowl eligible, that’s what I’ll do.” — Chambers, who had 19 carries for 100 yards and was 3 of 5 for 62 yards.
— “We haven’t decided who our quarterback is. We’ve got two really competitive guys. Our players are going to support whoever we play out there. I’m going to let it sit at that.” — Bohl
— “We always think we can do more or do better on the defensive end. That was an offense that was averaging 52 points a game and held them 200 yards total offense. We did the most we could, but I wouldn’t say we played great.” — UW junior middle linebacker Logan Wilson
— “Everyone on that sideline thought we were going to come back and win. We were in two-minute mode and Sean didn’t really practice doing that. It wasn’t too much of a surprise.” — UW senior running back Nico Evans about the decision to play Vander Waal over Chambers on the final possession.
— “I’m not on the defense, but I can only imagine how frustrated they are to get a stop and we go three and out. That’s something that we need to improve on.” — Evans on UW’s offense and how well the Cowboys’ defense played.
— “We won with defense and a huge play on special teams. There are times when you have to come on the road and find a way to win even when things aren’t going great. We didn’t give up the ball and didn’t do anything stupid.” — Utah State coach Matt Wells
