Cheyenne Central
Coach: Mike Lepore
Girls in 2018: Sixth at Class 4A state tournament.
Boys in 2018: Third at Class 4A state tournament.
About the Indians: Senior Ethan Cates was third at the Class 4A state tournament last season. The players who finished ahead of him have graduated. Cates spent the summer playing a lot of tournament golf, including stops at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in California and the Junior Americas Cup in Canada. … Caden Jackson was 11th at state last year, while Ben Auer tied for 18th. “I expect our fourth and fifth spots in the lineup to be real battles,” Lepore said. “If we can get our first three guys to shoot in the 70s and four and five somewhere in the 80s, we’ll be really competitive again. There are some good teams out there, but we’ll have a chance at the big trophy if we get those scores.” … The Lady Indians also will be in the hardware hunt. Jennifer Gillotti (18th) and Reese Robinson (20th) are both back, and played well this summer. Emily Lucero (31st) and McKenzie Wilson (34th) also return to the lineup. “We might sneak into the trophies if we play well,” Lepore said.
Cheyenne East
Coach: Paul Hartigan
Girls in 2018: Seventh at Class 4A state tournament.
Boys in 2018: Second at Class 4A state tournament.
About the Thunderbirds: Michael Pope is the top returning player for East, which has finished as state runner-up the past two seasons. Senior Brody Cline tied for 14th at last year’s state tournament, while junior Eli Cole split 18th. Granston Webb played well during the spring. Pope, Cole and Webb should be in the lineup week in and week out, while Cline and seniors Gannett Jacobsen and Hunter Lissman will compete for the final two spots. … Junior Michelle Weatherly tied for 21st at state a year ago. “We expect big things out of her,” Hartigan said. “She is hitting the ball really well right now.” … Kensie Sherard and Jozlyn West are also back in the lineup for East.
Cheyenne South
Coach: Eric Haag
Girls in 2018: Ninth at Class 4A state tournament.
Boys in 2018: 11th at Class 4A state tournament.
About the Bison: South has the makings of a good girls team, starting with junior Paige Guille, who tied for 15th at last year’s state tournament. She was regularly shooting in the low-90s to mid-80s during the spring season. Lena Kentner, Dara Hill and Brynley Guille also are experienced players for the Bison. “To have four girls all returning is a big deal for South in and of itself,” Haag said. “They have all worked hard and improved a lot. Now, they’re ready to see the fruits of their labor.” … Ethan Osvold, Dax Fisher and Zane Hayden all played at state for the boys squad. “Those guys were kind of thrown to the wolves last year, but they are a year older and a year better,” Haag said. “They understand the ups and downs of the game. (Hayden) has gutted it out for four years and made incremental improvements. He could have a good senior year.”
