CHEYENNE – Cheyenne Central senior Porscha Cavanaugh and sophomore Kira Brownell both qualified for the finals of the Class 4A state swimming and diving meet in two events Friday.
Cavanaugh had the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle (24.83), while Brownell was second (24.28). Cavanaugh had the second-fastest time in the 100 free (55.32). Brownell also qualified for today’s finals in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 59.49 was the second-best of the qualifying heats.
The pair joined senior Sally Osterman and junior Hannah Birge on the 200 medley relay squad, which qualified third (1 minute, 53.47 seconds). Brownell, senior Christa Vanlandingham, junior Alyssa Samuelson and sophomore Abby Allen had the third-best qualifying time in the 400 free relay (3:49.55). Cavanaugh, Vanlandingham, Allen and senior Emma Reed were third in qualifying for the 200 free relay (1:44.22).
Birge qualified fifth for the 100 butterfly finals (1:02.13), while Vanlandingham reached the 100 free finals with a time of 55.93, which was sixth-fastest.
Reed rounded out Central’s finals qualifiers. She is fourth in 1-meter diving with 258.2 points entering the finals. East senior Erica Farris leads the diving field heading into the finals. She scored 102.1 points during the semifinals to move from second to first.
Cheyenne South sophomore Liberty Edwards qualified for the finals of the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:08.14 was the fourth-fasted in 100 breast qualifying. Her time of 2:16.75 in the 200 IM was fifth.
Classmate Ellie Brewer reached the 500 freestyle finals by finishing sixth in qualifying (5:40.54).
