CHEYENNE – David Peebles’ injured ribs don’t hurt as badly after his first bareback ride of the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
The Redmond, Oregon, cowboy scored 84.5 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Sugar Boom Boom to take the first go-round lead Monday afternoon.
Peebles suffered separated ribs earlier this month, and his chest was heavily wrapped after his ride.
“It’s bearable,” Peebles said. “The people in Justin Sports Medicine tape it up real good and do a great job of taking care of me. It feels good enough to keep going, and that’s all I need.”
Peebles’ draw went straight out of the chute and across Frontier Park Arena, keeping a good rhythm of bucking and kicking the entire way.
“I had heard it was a good horse, and I was excited to get on it,” Peebles said. “I didn’t really know what she was going to do, but she bucked really good, and I was able to finish the ride.”
Peebles is 38th in the most recent Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings. His season has started to pick up lately.
“I’m getting a little healthier, and I’m starting to win,” Peebles said.
“Everything’s paying off.”
Caleb Bennett, Lane McGehee and Jamie Howlett are all tied for second in bareback with 82.5 points.
Bennett drew United Pro Rodeo’s War Party, a horse on which he won a round of the Circuit Finals in Tucson, Arizona. Bennett scored 87 points on that ride.
“I knew it was a good horse and I would have a chance to score decent points on him,” said Bennett, who hails from Tremonton, Utah. “He went a little left. If we had been able to be a little closer to the bucking chutes, we might have been a few more points.”
McGehee – who won the College National Finals Rodeo title in June – said his ride couldn’t have gone much better.
“That horse is kind of wild and likes to throw his head around,” the Victoria, Texas, resident said. “Once he got out of all that and turned back, he really lined out and was really rider-friendly and good to spur. That’s what a guy wants.
“He wants one he can really spur on and not one that’s really jerky.”
Howlett was excited to get on United Pro Rodeo’s Pay Day because he had heard good things about it.
“That’s a really nice horse that will let you put a perfect spur ride on it,” Howlett said. “It’s a bareback rider’s dream with how nice it is.”
Howlett, 26, is riding at CFD for the second time. He had some issues with his visa and had to go back home to Roma, Australia, for more than a year.
“I had a lawyer who kind of messed me about and didn’t do it right,” Howlett said. “I went home for a bit and got a new lawyer, who got everything straightened out so I could get back over here.”
Steer wrestling
Ty Erickson and Clayton Hass are in the same traveling group. It’s a collection of four cowboys who have three good horses. They showed off that horsepower Monday afternoon.
Erickson tipped his steer in 7.2 seconds to take the first go lead. Hass turned in a time of 8.1 seconds and sits second.
“Cheyenne is such a unique setup, and some of the steers walk out and some run,” said Erickson, who is No. 1 in the world standings. “I drew one that wanted to walk out, and I was able to catch up to it fast, and I had everything work out when I got onto the ground.”
Erickson and Hass both rode a horse named Cadillac during their runs. Cadillac – which is owned by Mark Wallace of Justin, Texas – has been named the PRCA’s steer wrestling horse of the year two of the past three years and was second the other time.
“This horse is good anywhere you go,” said Hass, who lives in Weatherford, Texas. “I trained this horse about five years ago and got him started. Our whole crew is really fortunate to ride this horse day in and day out because he gives us a chance everywhere we go.”
Tyler Waguespack and Dakota Eldridge also travel with Erickson and Hass. Erickson is ranked No. 1 in the world standings, Waguespack is No. 2 and Eldridge is fifth. Hass ranks 15th.
“It helps to be in a group that wins a lot because it pushes you along,” Erickson said. “We have a lot of horsepower, but we also motivate each other. You don’t want to be the bottom end of our crew.”
Bull riding
Elliot Jacoby moved into second place in the first go by scoring 87 points on Hi-Lo ProRodeo’s Shortcut. The bull got into a good right-hand spin right out of the chute, but also had a good front end drop that caused Jacoby problems.
“They said he was pretty good, but he would want to pull me down right out of there,” said Jacoby, who lives in Fredericksburg, Texas. “I got past that, and I gathered him up and floated around there. You just have to look over the outside shoulder and stay up on your rope.”
Cody Teel moved into third in the first go with an 84-point ride on Dakota Rodeo’s American Sniper. The bull started out by spinning to the right before changing directions in the middle of the ride.
“I handled that direction change pretty well, but I started letting him raise me up just a tick there at the end of the ride,” said Teel, who calls Kountze, Texas, home. “I wasn’t as strong as I would have liked to have been, but everything worked out well.”
