LARAMIE — Former University of Wyoming offensive tackle Frank Crum made a name for himself at last weekend’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Laramie native tied for the second-fastest 40-yard dash time among offensive linemen at 4.94 seconds. Crum did so in style, catching plenty of praise for his golden locks of hair on social media in the process.
“I’m very privileged to be here,” Crum told the NFL Network after the performance. “We knew we could run sub-five, and I was thankful to be able to do that today.
“... To carry on a three-generation legacy means the world to me. It was a no-brainer going to Wyoming out of high school to play for my hometown and my home state. To hopefully play football past college and still represent the state of Wyoming, that means the world to me.”
Crum finished the combine with a unofficial relative athletic score of 9.82 out of a possible 10. The RAS is a metric created by Kent Lee Platte to measure an individual’s overall athleticism based on combine results in multiple categories, according to Pro Football Network.
Crum’s 9.82 RAS ranked 25th out of 1,314 offensive tackles at the Combine since 1987. The RAS system graded his composite speed and explosiveness as “elite” and his size as “great.”
Crum was originally projected as a day three prospect in the NFL draft, but the combine results could be enough to bolster his stock in the coming months. He also has a plethora of experience on the offensive line, having started 48 of his 55 career games at UW.
Crum played right tackle for the majority of his career before moving to left tackle for his final season. He was a first team All-Mountain West selection last fall and was named third team All-MW in 2022 by Pro Football Focus.
Crum wasn’t the only player representing UW at the combine. Middle linebacker Easton Gibbs also accepted an invitation, clocking in at 4.73 in both rounds of the 40-yard dash.
Gibbs concluded his UW career No. 8 in school history in total tackles with 362. He finished last season ranked No. 13 among all active Football Bowl Subdivision players in total tackles.
Gibbs was also a first team All-MW selection the past two seasons in Laramie.
“(My vision is) making it to the next level,” Gibbs told reporters at the combine. “That’s what we’re all here for. I think manifestation is a powerful thing, so, believing in yourself and kind of moving forward in that aspect of knowing nothing is ever too big for the moment is a good thing to go by.”
Crum and Gibbs — along with a handful of other NFL hopefuls from UW — will have another opportunity to showcase their skills at the school’s pro day March 19 in Laramie.
The NFL draft runs April 25-27 in Detroit.
